CSM’s Success at Cambridge University Entrepreneurs Society 20K Competition

Founded by three Cambridge University students, Cambridge Surgical Models was established with a mission to engineer and manufacture hyper-realistic synthetic organ models that will transform out-of-theatre surgical training.

Despite being amidst intense academic commitments, whether completing PhD studies or medical school, the trio applied to Cambridge University Entrepreneurs’ 20K Competition in early 2023, with the hope of pitching their idea and gaining support from the Cambridge University ecosystem. Competing through multiple rounds of the competition, Mark, Sam, and Senthooran pitched, showcased, and developed their entrepreneurial skills, ultimately being selected to present at the Trinity Bradfield Centre to a panel of VC and industry expert judges.

With stiff competition, including finalists generating significant annual recurring revenue and others holding multiple patents, the Cambridge Surgical Models team remained steadfast in their goals. They highlighted the current shortfalls in surgical training and associated patient outcomes, and demonstrated how improved out-of-theatre training can enhance surgeon skill, decision-making, and confidence, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

To the team’s great surprise, the panel of judges awarded Cambridge Surgical Models 1st Prize, consisting of £20,000 in funding, generously provided by Cambridge Entrepreneurs Society and IQ Capital. This marked the team’s first step in securing funding, enabling them to rent premises and invest in equipment, ultimately kickstarting their research and development.
